LEARN provides you with all the tools that you will need to launch your career in web or software development!  That isn’t to say that you can just glide through the program, you will have to work hard to capitalize on these resources.  After my program I felt like I had everything I needed in order to start a job or independently continue my education.   In my opinion it teaches you how to go about learning, which will be an ever present aspect of your career.  Most importantly, the LEARN family will always be there to lend a helping hand.

I could easily write a review on how many different languages, technologies and frameworks I encounter on the bootcamp but I would like to comment on depth of course. You learn so much more than just code. You develop as a person because you are pushed in so many ways. You’ll learn how to present, collaborate, challenge and communicate. You’ll be taught by dedicated and engaged teachers who have the interpersonal skills to make complex subject easy to digest. You have access to a brilliant week of career development which is so key in landing your first job as a developer, as you’ll soon realize it not just how well you code that will secure you your first role in tech. You are pushed hard with coding independently but conversely you have access to developers with decades of knowledge and “know how” so you never feel stranded. I have made friends for life on the bootcamp through the collaborative nature of the course. It was a key chapter in my not just my career, but my life.

Being at LEARN Academy not only kept me motivated to cram months and months of full stack development knowledge within a short period of time, but the staff and leadership shared past experiences and lessons learned as a developer, offered mentorship, and provided access to the invaluable network within San Diego. I cannot thank LEARN Academy enough to allow me to switch from being a healthcare management consultant to a data engineer within a few months, which ultimately allowed me to achieve my goal of being within the software industry and actually making a difference. While I am done with my boot camp experience at LEARN Academy, I know that I will keep them involved in my current and future plans and help them continue their amazing efforts within the San Diego community.

I came to LEARN to disrupt my mid-career boredom. There were a few bootcamp-style options, but I was drawn to LEARN for several reasons: the unique internship aspect of the program; a commitment to diversity I saw in their staff, alumni, and community involvement; their place at the center of an active tech community; and the fact that, because they are local, they would be in touch with the needs of San Diego employers. I’m over 40 and approach all new situations with skepticism. I started LEARN waiting to find out that it was all a sham, that I’d been taken for a ride, or that the level of learning was nothing I couldn’t find in a few YouTube videos and I am SO happy to say I was wrong. All of what drew me to LEARN in the first place proved to be true. The educators are so passionate about the success of each student, as is the management – they have a reputation to uphold in this community, and that start with putting well-prepared program grads into the workforce. Beyond the tech curriculum and the amazing educators, two extremely valuable pieces of this program are the Career Services and the Internship. Students have real interviews with real companies, no smoke and mirrors. And the professional development portion of the curriculum combined with ongoing career services advice is WAY more than I ever got from NYU.

LEARN was absolutely instrumental in getting me to where I am today. Before I attended LEARN I was stuck in a marketing job with little opportunity for advancement and days full of busywork. Now, I am a junior engineer at the beginning of a (hopefully!) long and productive career. My employment outlook is significantly brighter: I have a better job that’s more fun and engaging, pays better, is more stable, has more room for internal growth and advancement, and values my personal and professional growth. And should I ever choose to leave it, there are tons of great opportunities in the industry to move on to other organizations doing exciting work with an ever-evolving technology stack. Changing careers was a big and scary step, and it isn’t easy, but LEARN has consistently supported and empowered me to make this change, and that support continues today, more than a year after I graduated from their program.

A year ago, I was a wedding planner. Today, I am a software engineer at a Fortune 500 company. People laugh when I tell them that…like they think it must be a joke. Let’s be real: it does sound like a joke. But it’s 100% true, and that is in large part due to my experience at LEARN. Go to LEARN. Gain an education. Leave with a family.

If you’re looking for a challenge and you want your career to be a creative outlet, this bootcamp is a good jumpstart into the inventive world of computer programming. LEARN academy will introduce you to the popular technologies used by many companies (Git, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, Bootstrap, SQL, RSpec, Ruby, and Rails) and give you the space to create webpages and web applications with motivated peers. A big plus with LEARN is that they’re well connected in the programming industry so you’re exposed to meeting a lot of developers from around the world. Also, you’re given real world coding experience by being placing into an internship at the end of the program. I was apart of LEARN academy’s third cohort. As many of my classmates and instructors would say, we looked forward to (almost) every day ????

LEARN was the best decision I’ve made EVER! Quitting my full time job was the hardest part, but once I realized how much there is to learn, and grow, it was literally the best decision I’ve made. I had a career in a non-technical background and tried to learn something totally new. It was my turn to take my career into my hands and physically change it for the better. You can go to code school for many reasons, but at the end of the day, you are learning invaluable skills to put in your tool box. The best part is that those tools can be used in so many different capacities, that it’s really up to you to run with it in any which way you want. Example: Software engineer, Web Developer, Email Developer, Marketing, Technical Support, Technical Evangelist…and the list goes on. Skies the limit. LEARN teaches you how to learn new skills on top of learning HTML, CSS, JS, Ruby, and much more. I appreciate the staff being so supportive, and the other students who make the whole journey a lot of fun. The plus side is the LEARN community of alumni, students, mentors, and companies. It’s a win win.

I had been programming as a hobby and to help in my profession as an internet marketer for several years and wanted to switch to programming as my career. After a lot of searching for a bootcamp to help with this change in career I found LEARN in San Diego. It appealed to me for a few reasons. I wanted to move back to the San Diego area where I grew up, the bootcamp focused on full stack development which was what I wanted to do, and it was less expensive than the other bootcamps I was looking at and applying to.

What mattered to me the most were the people. I found out about LEARN from attending an SD Ruby Meetup. One of the people, Rob Kaufman (co-founder of LEARN) was giving a talk that broke things down in a way that made it easy for me understand how parts of Rails functioned. That was huge because at that time, I did not have a clear idea of what Rails was. I think it also says a lot about how LEARN is so heavily involved in the San Diego Tech scene. The lead instructor of my cohort was influential with his style of instruction. It was not so much the learning of languages and how to use a framework but the building of good programming habits (both technical and with concern to general programmer happiness). Instruction had more to do with learning to think and communicate like a programmer. Without the insights of Lisa (the outreach coordinator) and Chelsea (CEO), the transition to becoming a software developer personally would have been stifling. I’ve been working as a junior software developer now for about five months and to this day, I find myself with so much gratitude for this community of great people.

I attended LEARN academy from July 2016 to November 2016. I looked into the various bootcamps here in San Diego and the internship that is part of the curriculum set LEARN apart from other bootcamps. I can’t say enough about how awesome my experience was. It was very challenging, but at the same time it was manageable.
